Steven Lumbala is the proud owner of a brand new BlackBerry Torch after being selected as winner of the Maury L. Van Vliet Trophy emblematic of the Most Valuable Player of the CIS Mitchell Bowl.
Lumbala’s Dinos won the national football semi-final 35-8 over the Saint Mary’s Huskies Saturday afternoon, setting up a showdown with the hometown Laval Rouge et Or in the 46th Desjardins Vanier Cup Saturday afternoon at PEPS Stadium in Quebec City, live on TSN, Radio-Canada, and AM 770 CHQR.
Lumbala, a running back out of St. Francis High School, ran the ball 14 times for 127 yards and a touchdown to earn the game MVP selection by TSN. His TD came early in the third quarter and broke open a tight game in the Dinos’ favour. Facing a third-and-two situation, Lumbala took a direct snap in the wildcat formation and found a big hole, scampering 33 yards to pay dirt and giving the Canada West champs a 15-0 lead.
He and the Dinos will look for redemption at the Vanier Cup after falling 33-31 to Queen’s in last season’s national championship game.
