Mike Blondal swam for a number of clubs in his career as a swimmer starting at the Pointe Claire Swim Club, the Vancouver Dolphins, University of Houston and the UBC Thunderbirds and as a Senior National swimmer. Mike represented Canada as a swimmer in the 1975 Pan Am Games in Mexico, where he won two silver medals, and the FISU Games in Serbia. Mike has coached internationally for Canada at the FISU Games, World Aquatic Championships, Pam Am Games, and World Cups.
In September, 1988, Blondal arrived in Calgary out of Naniamo and was hired as the assistant head coach for the Dinos until 1994. In that year, he took over for former head coach Derek Snelling to become the head coach of the Dinos and the Director of Swimming at the University of Calgary Swim Club, a year-round competitive swim team that develops swimmers from novice to international competition.
Since taking over the Dinos, Blondal has earned U SPORTS Coach of the Year 10 times and has lead the swim teams to six U SPORTS men's swimming championships and three women's. His most recent championships came in 2011 when the Dinos swept both and Blondal was named U SPORTS Coach of the Year. He has also been named the Canada West Coach of the Year six times since the award's inception in the 2009-10 season.
Blondal has also led the Dinos to 15 men's and women's Canada West Championships.
