Hall of Fame Selection Criteria

Please read the following Hall of Fame nomination criteria. Nominations for the next induction class are currently open, and the nomination package is available at the bottom of this page.

The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to honour those who have contributed significantly to the University of Calgary’s athletics department. Persons may be recognized for their contributions as individual athletes, as members of a championship team, or for other unique contributions.

•    Coach
•    Builder
•    Team
 
ELIGIBILITY

The criteria for being considered for selection to the Hall of Fame are as follows:

1. Athlete
Individuals shall be eligible for selection if they have met all of the following criteria:

a. Athletic Accomplishments
Individuals shall be eligible for selection if they participated as a student-athlete at UCalgary for at least two (2) varsity seasons and have:

        1) Been named a first team All-Canadian, or
        2) Won a CIAU/CIS/U SPORTS national championship, or
        3) Set a national or world record, or
        4) Participated in the Olympic Games, FISU Games, or World Championships, or
        5) Participated on a national team,
        6) Led the nation in a recognized statistical category, or
        7) Succeeded as a professional athlete

b. Academic Standing
To be eligible for selection, a former student-athlete must have received a degree from the University of Calgary. No other academic factors shall be considered during the selection process.

c. Eligibility Waiting Period
A former student-athlete shall be first eligible for selection five (5) full academic years after last representing the University of Calgary in competition.

2. Coach
Former coaches who have had outstanding success in a varsity sport at the University of Calgary shall be eligible for consideration. All criteria and qualifications are based upon the candidate's participation while serving at the university; however, accomplishments prior to or after leaving the university may also be considered.

Selection will be based on:
        a. Career record
        b. Championships won (national and conference)
        c. National Top 10 rankings
        d. Development of program
        e. National achievements (ie. Coach of the year)
        f. Development of student-athletes(ie. Olympians and/or World, Canadian or CIAU/CIS/U SPORTS record setters; number of All-Canadians; number of national champions in individual sports)
        g. Length of distinguished service

Note: All coaches previously inducted as ‘Builders’ shall hereafter be listed under the ‘Coach’ category.

3. Builder
Persons who served as trainers, managers, administrators, community stakeholders, support staff, etc. and who have made a major contribution to the development and growth of the University of Calgary’s athletics program shall be eligible for induction in the Builder category.

4. Team
a. Varsity Teams: All teams who have won a CIAU/CIS/U SPORTS national championship will be eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame.

b. Relay Teams (i.e. swimming, track and field, etc.): Sub-individual teams and individuals of sub-Individual teams shall be eligible for selection if they have met all of the above criteria.
 
SELECTION PROCESS

1. Selection Committee

The selection committee shall be chaired by the Director of Athletics (or designate), who shall only vote in the case of a tie. The committee shall be comprised of:

•    One (1) representative appointed by the University of Calgary Alumni Association
•    Two (2) members of the University of Calgary faculty, appointed by the university president
•    Two (2) current members of the Hall of Fame – one male, one female
•    Two (2) current Dinos head coaches
•    Athletics Department staff (as appointed by the Director of Athletics)
•    At-large representative(s) (as appointed by the Director of Athletics)

Efforts should be made to respect gender equity on the Selection Committee. At no time shall the committee consist of more than twelve (12) persons, including the chair.

2. Nominations

a. A call for nominations shall be made in the spring of each year; however, nominations shall be accepted throughout the year. Nominations MUST be submitted on the official nomination form, available for download from the Athletics Department’s website. Incomplete nominations shall not be considered by the Selection Committee.

b. Nominations received after the deadline  in a given academic year will be considered in the FOLLOWING academic year.

c. Nominations will be accepted from all sectors of the community; however, ALL nominations shall be endorsed by at least one (1) alumnus of the University of Calgary.

d. Nominees not selected for induction will be automatically reconsidered the following academic year, unless the nomination is withdrawn. After two years, that individual/team would require re-nomination.

e. Nominations shall consist ONLY of the official nomination form and supporting documentation (i.e. letters of support). Other information will not be considered by the Selection Committee.

3. Selection Process

•    The Director of Athletics (or designate) shall convene the Selection Committee at a time consistent with planning for the induction event.

4. Annual Induction Maximum

•    No more than five (5) individuals and/or teams shall be inducted each academic year.
