CALGARY – Anton Amundrud threw for five touchdowns – three of which went to Daniel Wiebe – as the No. 5 Saskatchewan Huskies downed the Calgary Dinos 45-22 Saturday afternoon from McMahon Stadium.
The Huskies built a 24-11 lead at the half and never let off the gas, finishing the day with 644 total yards of offence to move to 4-1 on the year.
Calgary drops to 2-3 on the year.
"That is a very good football team (in Saskatchewan)," Calgary head coach
Ryan Sheahan said postgame. "They've got a senior quarterback, a senior running back and they're big up front. We knew we were going to be in tight. What we hoped to do was match them toe to toe, and in the beginning it looked like it was going to go that way. However, hitting the stall button against really good teams usually costs you in the end.
"Unfortunately, we were the victims of our own errors. I think it was indicative that our inability to move the football at certain spots in the game – putting the defence back out there against an experienced offence like Saskatchewan, they were going to find a way to drive it home and they did."
"We've had a number of close games, but this one hurt. We got beat. We need to take this lesson as a ball club and learn to move forward."
Calgary opened the scoring on an opening rouge by
Vince Triumbari before a five-yard run by
Jet Zakrzewski capped the Dinos' first drive with a major to make it 8-0 just 4:22 into the game.
After a field-position battle ensued, the Huskies finally got on the board with a big play late in the first. Amundrud threaded the ball between a pair of defenders to hit Thomas Jule in stride and the second-year receiver did the rest, sprinting for a 58-yard touchdown – the first of his career.
Saskatchewan took its first lead after another big pass from Amundrud. A nice pump fake got the defence to bite, leaving Daniel Wiebe wide open for a 37-yard score to make it 14-8 with 9:37 to play in the second quarter. Amundrud and Wiebe teamed up again for an 18-yard score and the two teams traded field goals as the Huskies built a 24-11 lead at halftime.
The Dinos did well in the third, holding the high-powered Saskatchewan off the score board and closing the gap to 24-14 after a 41-yard kick from Triumbari.
But the fourth was all Huskies.
Amundrud hit Wiebe for a 10-yard score before a 39-yard bomb to Dawson Lennea, before a 31-yard scoring run by Kayden Miller made it 45-14 with 2:45 still to play.
Zion Grant hauled in a 13-yard touchdown from Zakzrewski, and
Matt Sibley caught the two-point conversion to close out the scoring Saturday.
Amundrud finished the game with 429 yards passing and five scores. Ryker Frank led the ground game for the Huskies with 141 yards on just 12 carries.
David Jordan connected on 18-32 attempts for 209 yards, while Zakzrewski finished with 139 yards passing on 9-13 attempts.
Vincent Paquette led the Dinos in receiving with a career-high 100 yards on just four catches.
Defensively,
Ben Haden and
Darius Redhead each had sacks on the day for Calgary's defensive front. Redhead also forced a fumble on the day, as did defensive back
Tyreese Bristol.
Calgary is on the road for its next two, starting Saturday with a trip to Regina to take on the Rams at 2 p.m. from Mosaic Stadium.
