CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos (2-2) return home for their lone game on campus for a month, hosting the No. 5 Saskatchewan Huskies (3-1) at McMahon Stadium Saturday afternoon for an action-packed event.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, where the Dinos will look to start the second half of the regular season on a strong note. The game can be streamed live on Canada West TV.
HEADLINES
- Saskatchewan won both games last year in the head-to-head showdown, albeit by a mere nine points combined. The Dinos dropped a 44-40 heartbreaker in double overtime in Week 3 a season ago before Ryker Frank's go-ahead score with seven seconds left gave the Huskies a 16-11 win in the regular season finale.
- After a run of 16 wins in 19 showdowns with the Huskies from 2011-2021, the Dinos have struggled a bit against Saskatchewan - dropping six of the last seven regular-season contests.
- Saturday's meeting will be the only meeting between the two squads this season.
Calgary Dinos (2-2)
Next week: at Regina
- While the Dinos sit at 2-2 on the year, their two losses have come first in overtime to the reigning Hardy Cup champion Regina Rams in the season opener before a one-point loss on the road at Vancouver.
- Despite the loss, Calgary's defence continued to shine last week. The Dinos limited UBC to just 225 total yards of offence, including just 143 yards passing - the sixth time in the Ryan Sheahan era Calgary has held its opponents under 200 yards through the air.
- The Dinos also racked up another four sacks last week in Vancouver, marking the second time already this season they've brought down the opposing quarterback four times in a game. That had not happened for Calgary since a five-sack performance back on Oct. 30, 2021.
- It was another big showing from a Dinos' rookie last week, as first-year receiver Zion Grant had a breakout performance in Vancouver last weekend. The 6-foot-4 receiver from Pickering, Ont. made a career-high six catches for a game-high 139 yards, including a highlight grabbing touchdown where he broke a handful of tackles on a 42-yard catch and run.
- Calgary is back on the road for its next two games, starting Oct. 4 with a return game against the Regina Rams.
Saskatchewan Huskies (3-1)
Next week: vs. Alberta
- The Huskies are coming off a memorable 22-20 win over Regina in their latest installment off the U-Prairie Challenge. Anton Amundrud connected with Daniel Wiebe for a 60-yard touchdown with just 3:18 left in the fourth in what proved to be the difference in handing the Rams their first loss of the year.
- Amundrud leads all Canada West quarterbacks at the halfway point of the season in both passing yards per game (303.0) and passing touchdowns (nine).
- As a team, Saskatchewan leads the conference in a host of offensive statistical categories thus far, including points per game (36.8), yards per game (446.8), first downs per game (26.5) and redzone scoring as they are a perfect 18-for-18 when getting the ball inside the 20 yard line (13 touchdowns, five field goals).
- Up next, the Huskies return home to host Alberta, which hosts UBC this weekend looking for its first win of the year.
