Rams rematch on docket for Saturday

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos football team is off to Saskatchewan this weekend, traveling to Regina for a Saturday afternoon rematch with Regina. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. from Mosaic Stadium.

HEADLINES
  • Kieran Flannery-Fleck kicked a game-winning field goal with less than a minute left to give UBC a 32-30 win over the Dinos last week at McMahon Stadium, moving Calgary to 1-4 on the season with all four losses coming in one-score games.
  • A 14-point third quarter proved to be the difference for Manitoba last weekend in a 22-13 win over Regina in Winnipeg. The Rams trailed just 7-6 at the half against the undefeated Bisons, but couldn't overcome two long touchdown drives by Manitoba in the second half as Regina moved to 2-3 on the year.
  • The Canada West standings are something to take note of heading into the final three weeks. While the Dinos enter the week as the lone team at 1-4, plenty is still left on the table. Regina is currently in a three-way tie with Saskatchewan and Alberta for third place at 2-3, while UBC is just two games ahead of Calgary in second at 3-2.
  • Saturday's game is a rematch of this year's season opener back on Aug. 30 in Calgary. In that one, the Rams jumped out to a 16-2 lead through three quarters before the Dinos offence finally found its rhythm. A pair of fourth-quarter scores by Ben Britton and Luke Gutek made things close but time ran out on the Dinos' comeback effort.
  • Regina has claimed the last four against the Dinos, marking its longest win streak in the series. In fact, Calgary has lost its last three in the Queen City and four of its last six, with the last Dinos win in Regina coming back on Aug. 31, 2018.

Calgary Dinos (1-4)
Next week: BYE
  • Matthieu Clarke continued his hot streak last week. The third-year running back carried the ball a career-high 26 times for a season-best 187 yards on the ground. It marked the second time this season Clarke surpassed the century mark in rushing.
  • Nate Beauchemin continued to make a name for himself last weekend. The fourth-year safety hauled in his nation-leading fourth interception last weekend while also blocking a field goal attempt at the end of the first half. The Kelowna, B.C. product has also returned a pair of those picks for touchdowns and has 167 return yards - by far the most in all of U SPORTS this season.
  • Despite their 1-4 record, the Dinos aggragate score for the season is a mere minus-five. In fact, of the 15 total Canada West contests played heading into Week 6, eight of which finished as one-score games. Calgary has four of those.
  • After the bye week, the Dinos return to action with a trip west for a rematch with UBC on Friday, Oct. 18.

Regina Rams (2-3)
Next week: BYE
  • Regina started the season with a road win over Calgary before a surprising five-point victory over Saskatchewan. The Rams nearly made it a 3-0 start but dropped a 14-12 decision with UBC in Week 3 before falling to Alberta and Manitoba the past two weeks to move to 2-3.
  • Fourth-year D-lineman Tarick Polius leads all of Canada West thus far with 3.5 sacks on the year.
  • A former receiver for the Rams, Mark McConkey is in his fourth season as head coach of his alma mater, boasting a 5-0 record against Calgary.
  • The Rams return from the bye week with a trip to Saskatchewan Saturday, Oct. 19.
