CALGARY – The Canadian Football League season officially kicks off this week, and - as usual - the University of Calgary Dinos are well represented on rosters across Canada.
Calgary once again leads the way in putting players into the CFL as a total of 23 former Dinos have earned roster spots heading into opening week – the largest contingent from a single institution anywhere in North America.
"We are very proud of the Dinos that have gone on to play in the CFL," said Dinos football head coach
Wayne Harris. "It is a result of the hard work they have put in along with the great coaching they receive from our assistant coaches in their development as players."
This year's opening game between the Calgary Stampeders and Montreal Alouettes not only features nine former Dinos, it will serve as the CFL debut for 2022 first-round draft picks and twin brothers
Jalen Philpot and
Tyson Philpot.
Six more Dinos join Jalen on this year's Stamp's squad, as Elie Bouka, Sean McEwan, Charlie Moore, Ryan Sceviour, Richie Sandani and Nick Statz all will continue their careers at McMahon Stadium this season.
Three more former Calgary standouts will start the season in Alberta, as Adam Konar, J-Min Pelley, and Rashaun Simonise crack the Edmonton Elks' roster.
The number of Dinos across the league comes as no surprise, as Calgary has had an incredible 50 of its players selected in the CFL draft in just the last decade alone.
The 58th season of Dinos football gets underway with a marquee matchup at home on Friday, Sept. 2 when the Dinos battle the reigning Hardy Cup champion Saskatchewan Huskies.
