CALGARY – Field hockey goalkeeper Tayler Guy and men's soccer midfielder Eryk Kobza are the 2019-20 University of Calgary Dinos Bill Popplewell Rookies of the Year.

The two were honoured as part of the ongoing digital celebrations for the 53rd Annual Night of the Dino.

Guy edged wrestling's Grace Lew and Julia Omohkuale from rugby, while Kobza beat out Kaden Elder from hockey and basketball's Noah Wharton.

Since 2000, the Dinos' top male and female rookies have been honoured with the Bill Popplewell awards. Popplewell's support for the Dinos spans decades, through his time with various corporate sponsors. He has long given of his personal time and energy to numerous fundraising initiatives across a variety of sports.

Guy backstopped the Dinos to their best finish since 2011, recording an impressive 1.97 goals-against average on the year. She was named the CW goalie and rookie of the year as well as winner of the Joyce Slipp award as the U SPORTS rookie of the year in women's field hockey.

Guy is the second field hockey athlete to receive the Bill Popplewell award in its history, joining Tanis Bartolome back in 2006.

Kobza played big minutes for the Dinos as a true freshman, helping the team reach the national championship for the first time in program history. Highlighted by a two-goal outing at Fraser Valley, he finished with six points on the season and was named to the Canada West all-rookie team.

Kobza joins Bori Falaye (2017) as the men's soccer players to earn rookie-of-the-year honours in the award's history.

The virtual Night of the Dino celebrations wrap up Wednesday with the announcement of the 2019-20 Dr. Dennis Kadatz Athletes of the Year.
