The Dinos rowing team concluded their season in Victoria, BC at the Canadian University Rowing Championships November 2-3. Coming off their success at the Head of the Charles in Boston, the team had very high goals set for themselves. Unfortunately, the first day of qualifying started off with catastrophe as the team's top crew, the women's pair of
Courtney Kruschel and Eliza Dawson, caught a buoy and flipped during the time trial, which relegated them to last place. It was a devastating way to begin the competition as the team was frustrated through the first few events. By the end of qualification, only the women's eight had qualified for the A Final with a chance to compete for a medal.
On finals day, the Dinos stepped up their game to improve in every event. Kruschel and Dawson rebounded from their disappointment to dominate the C Final over Lakehead University. The men's eight then raced a very closely contested B Final against Carlton University. Carlton ultimately prevailed, but the Dinos had closed the gap between them from qualifying. The Dinos men's eight finished 8th overall to match the best-ever finish for the Dinos in that event.
The top men's result of the regatta went to the men's pair of
Levi Dvorak and
Kurtis Wenzel. Having finished 9th in qualifying, the men set out with a faster pace and had a brave performance. Although the men remained in 9th after the final race, their strategy and courage put them in 8th for most of the race. It was an excellent step up for such a new crew.
The lightweight women's single of
Alissa Webster provided the most exciting finish for the Dinos. Webster was sitting in 10th place as she approached the last 15 strokes of the race. With a phenomenal sprint, Webster passed the scullers from Simon Fraser University and the University of Guelph to finish in 8th place.
In the final race of the day for the Dinos, the women's eight came in with high hopes. Having finished 4th in 2018, this was the first time ever that the Dinos had qualified the eight for the A Final in consecutive years. After reevaluating their qualifying race, the Dinos raced more maturely and composed to significantly improve their performance. In the end, the Dinos women's eight finished 5th behind Brock University. The top three finishers were Western University, University of Victoria, and the University of British Columbia.
After a challenging weekend, the Dinos now have a short break before resuming with winter training. The team will also be recruiting new members in January to join their squad.
