Dinos compete at Canadian University Rowing Championship

The Canadian University Rowing Championships were held in Welland, ON November 5th through November 6th.  The Dinos sent a large team to the championship with representation in four boat classes for men and five boat classes for women.

In the men's races, the Dinos finished 13th in the both the lightweight men's double (Nolan Messer and Trevor Bartoli) and the lightweight men's 1x (Jeffrey Harder). Those three athletes then combined with two other teammates (Connor Fenton and Madison Pilling) to compete in the lightweight men's four where the Dinos finished in 12th place.

The top result for the men was achieved by the men's pair of Matthew Davenport and Brandon Mooney. After suffering a last-minute knee injury in 2015, Davenport and Mooney were unable to race in last year's CURC regatta.  One year later, they put together their best race to challenge the deepest field at the regatta that included nine Canadian National Development Team members. With a final sprint to overtake Dalhousie University, Davenport and Mooney finished 9th overall.

Dinos women began finals day with a strong 10th-place finish by Jasmine Chase in the women's single.  Jasmine raced earlier in the season as a lightweight rower on the Alberta team at the National Rowing Championships where she finished 11th.  Her 10th place finish in the heavyweight category was an excellent result.

In the lightweight women's 1x, Calaine Inglis struggled in her final to finish in 12th place.  Later in the day, Inglis joined with Hannah Kennedy to improve on her result with an 11th-place finish in the lightweight women's double.

The Dinos women's eight came into this season with very lofty goals after a very successful 2015 Championship.  After just missing out on the A Final, however, the Dinos were left to race for places 7 through 12.  After re-examining their race tactics, the Dinos women dominated the B Final to easily finish in 7th place.

The last race for the Dinos women was also the best as Courtney Kruschel and Colleen Nesbitt raced in the A Final of the women's pair.  Nesbitt finished in 5th place in the same category in 2015, so she was looking to improve on that result and challenge for a medal.  Despite a late push to try to pass Queen's University, the Dinos finished just off the podium in 4th place behind UBC, Western, and Queen's, and just ahead of perennial contender the University of Victoria and Carleton.

With the fall racing season complete, the Dinos now change their focus to winter training and the opportunity to get fitter, stronger, and faster. Next year's Canadian University Rowing Championships will be held November 4-5 in Burnaby, BC.
