MEDICINE HAT, Alta. – Head coach
Wayne Harris earned his first career CIS victory as the University of Calgary Dinos ran out to a big lead and held on for a 25-9 win over the University of Regina Rams Wednesday night at the Methanex Bowl in Medicine Hat.
BOX SCOREThe Dinos' starters dominated early, scoring a a trio of touchdowns in the first 21 minutes of the contest before both teams took advantage of an opportunity to see some of their younger players in action. Reigning Hec Crighton trophy winner
Andrew Buckley saw limited action, completing 6 of 10 passes for 90 yards while adding a 10-yard rushing TD, while
Mercer Timmis picked up 68 yards on his nine carries on the night. But it was
Quentin Chown who carried the biggest load for the Dinos, racking up 109 yards on 14 carries along with a 15-yard major.
Buckley gave way to
Jimmy Underdahl in the second quarter, and the fourth-year Notre Dame product connected with
Denzel Radford for a 28-yard touchdown to make it 21-0 Dinos. Regina responded just over three minutes later with the Rams' only major, a 14-yard Noah Picton pass to Davin Johnston.
From there, the orange nylon began to fly in earnest, with the Dinos whistled for 145 yards in penalties at the half. That total ended up at 230 on 28 infractions by the end of the game, while the Rams took 113 yards on 13 penalties.
The teams accounted for a total of just three safeties in the second half.
While the Dinos will certainly focus on their discipline after taking an inordinate number of penalties in the game, Harris was happy with the result and the opportunity to see his team on the field against an opponent.
"Certainly the starting group came out and executed very well," said Harris. "The second quarter got away from us a little bit as we were trying to cycle some guys through. Anytime you get on the field against an opponent it's an opportunity to explore some different things. But we have to clean the execution and discipline up."
The Dinos open the 2015 Canada West regular season next Friday night, Sept. 4, when they host the UBC Thunderbirds at McMahon Stadium. KICKOFF 2015, capping off the University of Calgary's Orientation week, will get started at 3:30 p.m. with the tailgate followed by the game at 5:30 p.m.
