Dinos put up big numbers again in Vancouver

VANCOUVER – The second-ranked University of Calgary Dinos found the end zone on each of their first three offensive drives of the game and didn't let up, cruising to a 59-11 win over the UBC Thunderbirds Saturday afternoon.

Mercer Timmis ran for 149 yards while Andrew Buckley tossed for 322 yards and four touchdowns as the Dinos ran their conference win streak to 11 games with a dominant performance, picking up 719 offensive yards against UBC's 177. For the second week in a row, Calgary's defence didn't give up an offensive touchdown, with UBC's points coming off a pair of safeties and an 80-yard interception return touchdown.

Calgary improves to 2-0 on the year, while UBC falls to 0-2.

"I thought the tempo coming out was very good on both sides of the ball, and as the game went on we were able to settle down, play our brand of football, and play with power and intensity," said Calgary head coach Blake Nill. "Buckley was doing a good job making the right reads, and overall our offence moved the ball at will for most of the game."

Timmis picked up two more touchdowns on the day to bring his season total to four, and he opened the scoring just 2:18 into the ball game to wrap up a six-play, 74-yard drive with a 7-yard stroll to the end zone. Just four minutes later, Buckley connected with Jake Harty, who made a spectacular juggling catch in the end zone to make it 14-0. Then, just over three minutes after that, Jimmy Underdahl capped a third straight Calgary TD drive with his first of three majors on the day as Calgary jumped out to a 21-0 lead.

The Dinos would put 24 more on the board before halftime. Timmis picked up his second TD, this one on a 30-yard reception from Buckley. Tyler Ledwos scored his first career CIS touchdown on a 71-yard bomb, and Brett Blaszko hauled in a 20-yard TD pass late in the first half. And on the final play of the second quarter, Johnny Mark hit from 42 yards after a Doctor Cassama interception gave the Dinos the ball back inside UBC territory, and Calgary took a 45-4 lead into halftime.

Underdahl picked up two more rushing TDs in the second half from five and two yards out to make it 59-4, and UBC's only major of the day came when Chris Adams picked off an errant Eric Dzwilewski pass and ran it back 80 yards.

UBC's offence sputtered all day as the Calgary defence held them in check. Combined, the Thunderbird pivot tandem of Carson Williams and Greg Bowcott managed just six completions on 25 attempts for 57 yards and a pair of interceptions. On the ground, the T-Birds picked up 120 yards, with Williams leading the way with 57. Brendon Deschamps, the second-leading rusher in the nation last season, was held to just 41 yards.

On the flip side, the Dinos moved the ball virtually at will. Blaszko had another huge day receiving with 149 more yards after picking up 198 against Alberta in Week 1, while Ledwos picked up 83 and Austen Hartley added 73. Buckley went 17-24 in passing, and the Dinos rumbled for 313 yards along the ground.

Defensively, Cassama and Adam Konar picked up interceptions for Calgary  while Thomas Spoletini led the way with four solo tackles on the day. Konar, in his first CIS game since playing with the Thunderbirds in 2011, added 3.5 tackles on the day.

The Dinos head back on the road next weekend to face the Saskatchewan Huskies (2-0) Friday night at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.
