Jack Simpson Gym
The Jack Simpson Gymnasium was built in the leadup to the 1988 Olympic Winter Games. In conjunction with the Faculty of Kinesiology expansion and the construction of an indoor speed-skating oval, CANA Construction’s massive undertaking took place without the disruption of existing facilities on the University of Calgary campus.
With a $28-million price tag, the complex opened on time — June 3, 1987. Featuring a triple-sized gym, which met all international standards for basketball and volleyball, this was an architectural marvel, with seating for 3,454 and even a running track on the upper level. Especially innovative was the gym’s “floating” floor, supported by an impact-reducing honeycomb design.
The Jack Simpson Gymnasium, which serves as headquarters for the Dinos basketball and volleyball teams, has hosted national championships and provincial high school showcases. And, every year, thousands of University of Calgary graduates grace the gym’s stage during convocation ceremonies.
