Greg Vavra

  • Title
    Quarterbacks

A graduate of the University of Calgary degrees in commerce and law, Greg returned to the Dinos’ coaching staff in 2006, serving as Offensive Coordinator. He currently coaches quarterbacks.

Vavra is no stranger to the Dinos football program. He quarterbacked the Dinos to their first Vanier Cup in 1983 and became the first University of Calgary player to win the Hec Crighton Trophy as the most outstanding player in Canadian college football. He was the Canada West all-star quarterback from 1980 to 1983 and was the All-Canadian quarterback in 1983.

Vavra is the school’s all-time leading passer, still holds the record for the longest field goal in school history (52 yards), and is the only Dinos football player to have his number (17) retired. He was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame with the inaugural class in 1995.

After graduating from the University of Calgary, Greg played in the Canadian Football League for five seasons with the Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Eskimos, and BC Lions before retiring to pursue his law degree and enter the private sector in the oil and gas industry.

Greg is currently employed in the oil and gas industry in Calgary. He is active in the Dinos Fifth Quarter Alumni Association.
