Komori sparks Dinos in dominant 3-0 win over Bisons

WINNIPEG – In her second weekend of Canada West action, first-year outside hitter Kalyssa Komori has announced her arrival.

After a career-best 10 kills on Thursday, Komori added 14 on Friday night, leading the University of Calgary Dinos women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-19, 25-21) over the defending U SPORTS national champion Manitoba Bisons at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

The Dinos capitalized on every opportunity the Bisons gave them. Calgary finished with a .271 hitting rate and 11 total blocks, while Manitoba hit just .097, committing 24 attack errors and recording four blocks. Both teams now sit at 2-2 in the standings.

The home team's struggles began early. Calgary scored five of their first seven points off attack errors and jumped to a 9-2 lead. A 6-1 run by Manitoba cut the deficit to 17-15, but strong play from reigning Canada West Rookie of the Year Sophia Hansen helped Calgary close out the set.

Manitoba looked poised to rebound in set two, jumping to an early 6-2 lead thanks to a strong service run from Raya Surinx. Leading 15-14, Manitoba watched their advantage vanish during an 8-0 Dinos run. When Calgary wasn't scoring off Bisons' mistakes, Komori was making an impact, helping secure the set.

Komori continued to dominate in set three, keeping the score close before helping Calgary pull away mid-set. Surinx rallied Manitoba with a pair of short runs, bringing the Bisons within one at 20-19, but service errors ultimately gave Calgary breathing room. Leni Blanke closed out the match with an ace.

Outside of Komori's big night, Calgary received key contributions from their middles. Narelle Arnold had six kills and seven block assists, and Blanke added five kills and five block assists. Anya Fehr contributed 26 assists over the three-set match.

For Manitoba, Surinx and Eve Catojo each recorded 10 kills, while Julia Martens added 24 assists.

The Dinos continue their road swing next weekend against the Trinity Western Spartans, Nov. 7–8. Manitoba will enjoy a bye week before visiting the Brandon Bobcats, Nov. 14–15.
