Lethbridge, ALTA. – Five different players for the University of Calgary Dinos scored in double figures to lead the men's basketball team to a 92-87 road win over a game Lethbridge squad on opening night from the Co-op Centre for Sport & Wellness.
The Dinos - who come into the season after claiming their latest Canada West banner last March - move to 1-0 with the win.
Second-year guard
Daniels Baumanis led the Dinos in this one with 18 points on 6-12 shooting to go with three assists and two steals.
Hayden Franson poured in 17 points on 7-11 shooting in his Calgary debut.
Martynas Sabaliauskas added 14 points and eight rebounds, while
Daniel Chijioke tallied 12 and five to go with
Dre Francis' 11 points and eight boards. Second-year guard
Eli Djordjevic stuffed the stat sheet in his Dinos debut with nine points, eight rebounds and a team-high five assists.
Kymani Pollard led all players with 25 points and 11 rebounds in a losing effort for the Pronghorns.
It was a bit of a slow start by both squads, with Calgary jumping out to a 7-1 lead four minutes in.
Aidan Smith pushed the Dinos' lead once again to six at 18-12, but a pair of Karter Fry free throws made it a four-point game after one.
Five quick points from Pollard gave the 'Horns the lead and showed they were not going to go down quietly in this one. The lead flipped back and forth a number of times of the next two quarters, with Calgary holding a 71-66 edge heading into the fourth.
A triple by Franson gave the Dinos their largest lead of the night at 76-67 with 7:52 to play, only to see Lethbridge respond in a big way and tie things up at 83 with just 3:17 left on the clock. The 'Horns took a brief lead, but some clutch shooting down the stretch and a great defensive effort in the game's closing moments helped Calgary ice thsi one away to move to 1-0.
Saturday's rematch is set for 7 p.m. again from Lethbridge.
