CALGARY – A little over six months has passed since the University of Calgary Dinos captured the fifth Vanier Cup in program history, with a 27-13 win over the Montreal Carabins last November in Quebec City.

Friday, the players received their championship rings in ‘drive-thru’ fashion at McMahon Stadium.

Every ring has a story, and the number ‘five’ features prominently in the story of the 2019 national championship jewelry – recognizing the history of the program while celebrating the achievements of the 2019 team.

The Dinos’ fifth football national title was won in the 55th edition of the Vanier Cup. Five red stones surround each side of the interlocking UC logo – paying tribute to the University of Calgary – on the ring’s top, recognizing both the five championships and, together, the 10 wins the team secured over the 2019 season. ‘National Champions,’ set in gold, completes the top.

The top of the ring is encircled by each of the championship years with 2019 appearing at the front of the ring. The sides of the ring pay homage to the past Vanier Cup victories in 1983, 1985, 1988, and 1995.

On one side of the ring, five Vanier Cup trophies celebrate Calgary’s five championships. Below the trophies, the Roman numeral LV honours the 55th championship game. The opposite side features the individual’s name and the Dinos logo below pointed teeth, representing the grit the team displayed throughout the season.

On the bottom of the ring is the player’s number inside a football, recognizing each player and the contribution they made to the team’s success.

Inside the ring are game scores of the Hardy Cup, the Mitchell Bowl, and Vanier Cup, marking the team’s playoff run. Underneath the scores appears ‘T.E.A.M.’ (Together Everyone Achieves More), honouring the full team effort shown in 2019.

At the bottom of the ring is “Always Remember” in recognition of the team song that follows each victory.

The ring was manufactured at the Jostens plant in Denton, Texas, marking the fourth time the company has produced a Vanier Cup ring for the Dinos. The stones are simulated diamond-cut garnet, to represent the predominant red of UCalgary, while the white stones are cubic zirconia. All the stones came from Jostens’ official supplier in Germany.
