Dinos drop Varsity Blues to open eastern swing

| By:
TORONTO - The defending CIS champion University of Calgary Dinos got the better of the home team Thursday night, cruising to a 6-1 win over the Toronto Varisty Blues to open a four-game eastern non-conference swing.

Toronto held Dinos star and Team Canada captain Hayley Wickenheiser to one goal and one assist on the night. Six different Calgary players scored in the win.

Calgary opened the scoring early in the first period when second-year defenceman Stephanie Zvonkovic sent a low point shot through traffic to beat Blues goaltender Nicole Kesteris along the ice.

The Blues held the Dinos to a 1-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of action.

Calgary came out raring to go in the second period and controlled the play for the majority of the frame. Kesteris stood on her head, denying numerous two-on-one attempts in the early goings.

The Blues almost got on the board when rookie forward Taylor Day sent a centering pass to Amanda Ricker in front of the net, but the Dinos defence prevailed and cleared the puck out of harms way.

Wickenhesier put the visiting squad up by two with 2:18 remaining with a quick snap shot from the high slot. Calaine Inglis notched the Dinos third marker just nine seconds later, catching the Blues off guard and wiring the puck into the back of the net. Calgary led 3-0 heading into the final frame.

Russian Olympic hockey player Iya Gavrilova scored five minutes into the third period, jumping on a Wickenheiser rebound in front of the net. Calgary native Erika Mitschke took advantage of a Blues defensive mishap less than two minutes later to score the Dinos fifth goal of the game.

Fellow veteran forward Sinead Tracey rounded out Calgary's scoring, skating across the front of the net and backhanding the puck five-hole to find the mesh.

The Blues spoiled the shut out with just over eight minutes to go in the game when Courtney Tougas ripped a slap shot at Dinos netminder Jennifer Mallard and fellow second-year forward Jacqueline Scheffel was there to bury the rebound.

The Dinos resume their four-day series against the powerhouse Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks Friday night at 5 p.m. MT. The weekend concludes with dates against York on Saturday followed by a trip to London to face the Western Mustangs Sunday.
