Record-setting Ifield named CIS player of the week

| By:
CALGARY – University of Calgary kicker Aaron Ifield has been named the Canadian Interuniversity Sport special teams player of the week.

A fifth-year senior, Ifield moved one step closer to the top of the national leaderboard Friday night at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.

Sherbrooke's Jean-Philippe Shoiry won the national nod on offence, while Montreal's Julien Hamel was named defensive player of the week.

Ifield was perfect on his four field goal attempts from 14, 39, 27, and 23 yards, bringing his career total to 69 and setting a new Canada West all-time record.

Sitting with an impressive 16-for-18 stat line with one game remaining in 2010, Ifield needs just one field goal in the Dinos' last game Saturday against Alberta at McMahon Stadium to tie the CIS all-time record of 70, held by Western Ontario's Frank Jagas. A second field goal against the Bears would give him the national record outright.

To boot, Ifield had his best punting game of the season against the rams, averaging 47.5 yards on his four punts as the Dinos got a big road win 35-27.

Ifield along with 10 other fifth-year seniors will be honoured prior to Saturday afternoon's Battle of Alberta at McMahon Stadium, with kickoff to follow at 1 p.m.
