Wayne Thomas (BA '67) was a pioneer in athletics and has maintained his association with the Dinos for more than half a century. A member of the 1966 Dinos men’s basketball team that went to the national final, Thomas also played football at the University of Calgary before embarking on a long and legendary career as an educator and coach at Crescent Heights, Western Canada, Dr. E.P. Scarlett, and William Aberhart High Schools. He coached high school basketball for more than 30 years and was a leading figure in the development of the sport in the city, and he always maintained close ties to the Dinos, including a tenure as interim head coach of the program in 1989-90.

He was at the forefront on breaking the ground of the alumni program. The Dinos Basketball Foundation was born in the early 1980s. It was an initial scholarship program that aimed towards raising funds for the program.

Today, Wayne remains heavily involved on the board of the Sixth Man Club – the Dinos basketball alumni organization – and edits the Canada West hoops blog, providing in-depth coverage of university basketball in western Canada.
