Theresa Maxwell was the dominant female student-athlete of the 1960s on the University of Calgary campus. A native of Taber, Alberta, Theresa was the University of Female Athlete of the Year in 1964 and 1966. She competed at the University of Calgary from 1962-63 through 1965-66.
She was a starter on both the women’s volleyball and basketball teams. Theresa was captain of the University of Calgary Dinosaur women’s basketball team that captured the Western Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship in 1966. That championship was the initial Conference Championship in the history of the University of Calgary in women’s athletics.
Theresa earned Most Valuable Player honors both teams during her career at the U of C. She was a member of the Canadian National Women’s Basketball and Volleyball teams. In addition, she competed for Canada internationally at the NORCECA Championships in Mexico City in 1972.
She graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1966. She later attended the University of Oregon graduating with a Master of Science degree.
Maxwell later became the women’s volleyball coach at the University of Calgary and is currently an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and has held various administrative positions with the Canadian and Alberta Volleyball Associations. She was also recognized in May, 2000 by the Calgary Booster Club receiving a leadership award.
