Norm Minor was one of the dominant student-athletes on campus in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He excelled in both football and hockey, being a key player on both teams. He was a member of the Dinos hockey team and football team from 1967-70. Minor was University of Calgary Male Athlete of the Year in 1970.

Minor was the co-captain of both the Dino hockey and football teams. He was football team co-captain in 1968 and 1969 and hockey team co-captain in 1969 and 1970. Norm was team’s most valuable backfielder for the football team for two years.

A native of Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1970 Minor played on the hockey team that were Canada West Finalists and on the football team that finished in second place in what was then the Western Intercollegiate Football League.

During the 1969 football season, Minor as a speedy halfback led the Dinos in total offensive yardage. In addition he played on all specialty teams and sometimes on the defensive side of the ball. That same year he scored two touchdowns as the Dinos defeated the strong University of Alberta Golden Bears for the first time in the history of the young program. On the hockey rink, Minor was a physical defenseman. He was terrific in front of his own goal and in the corners backed down from no one.

Norm was drafted in the second round by Edmonton Eskimos in the 1969 Canadian College Draft and attended the Montreal Canadiens National Hockey Training Camp in 1967 prior to enrolling at the University of Calgary.

Minor graduated from the University of Calgary with a B.A and BEd. in 1971 prior to earning his M.A. and PhD.

He was employed in the Rockyview School District for 25 years serving as a teacher, coach, and administrator. He co-founded the Rockyview Football League in 1973 eventually becoming coach and commissioner. The Rockyview Championship Trophy is named in his honor.

In 2001 Norm was inducted into the Chestemere High School Hall of Fame in the builder category and in 2002 he was given the Distinguished Volunteer Award at St. Francis High School for his work on the School Parent Council.
