Lutz Keller was an outstanding two-sport athlete in the early 1970s excelling in both football and wrestling.
Keller played both ways on the University of Calgary football team starting along the offensive and defensive lines. He was a Western Intercollegiate Football League (now Canada West) all-star offensive lineman in 1970 and was Conference all-star defensive lineman in 1971. Lutz’s versatility was unique. During the 1971 season he even played in offensive backfield and carried 15 times for 70 yards scoring a pair of touchdowns as well as playing along the interior of defensive line at tackle.
In his final varsity football game Lutz had misfortune of suffering a severe knee injury with the prognosis being his wrestling career was over. Keller did not let that prognosis stand in way of competing again, with him winning the Canadian Open title in his weight division in 1972. He attended the Canadian National team training camp for the 1972 Olympics but a torn hamstring did not allow him to compete.
He wrestled competitively for the University of Calgary for four seasons from 1970 through 1973 in the heavy weight division. He was Canada West Champion in 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1973 in the heavyweight division.
In addition to competing at the varsity level Lutz was Canadian Open Champion in his weight class in 1970, 1971, and 1972. He represented Canada at the 1971 Pan American Games in Cali, Columbia.
Keller has the distinction of being named University of Calgary Male Athlete of the Year in both 1971 and 1973.
Lutz graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Economics and minor in Mathematics.
