Dr. Lou Goodwin became Director of the School of Physical Education in 1959 in what was then the University of Alberta at Calgary before the current campus existed on its present site. He served as Director form 1959 through 1965 whenhe came the first Dean and was a founding member of the Faculty of Physical Education (now Kinesiology). Dr. Goodwin served in that position until he retired in 1978.

Known as “Dr. Lou” to students and staff, he was instrumental in the Western Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Association (forerunner of the current CWUAA) serving both as President and Secretary.

He was Interim Athletic Director from December 1984 through June 1985 and was named Professor Emeritus upon his retirement as Faculty member in 1979.

Dr. Goodwin was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and was a lifetime member of the Canadian Association of Physical Education and Recreation (CAPHER). In addition to his valuable contribution on campus, Dr. Goodwin was active in the community he resided. He served as City Alderman and was also a member of the Calgary Public School Board.

The original wing in the Physical Education Complex was named in his honor on March 18, 1992.
