George Kingston, PhD, ‘Order of Hockey in Canada,’ led the Dinos to impressive heights in university hockey with a 245-128 record and five Canada West Championships – as well as successful international team competition – over 18 years patrolling the bench in Calgary. Twice Kingston was named CIAU Coach of the Year (1973-74 and 1980-81), with many players graduating to international and professional careers during his time. He spent 10 years as a volunteer with hockey Canada and was the head coach for Canada in winning their first gold medal in 33 years at the 1994 IIHF World Championships, as well as helping numerous other medal successes. In the NHL, Kingston was the first head coach in San Jose Sharks history and was an assistant coach in Calgary, Minnesota, Atlanta and Florida. Overall, he served as the National Coach for four other IIHF nations and two IPC nations. He also coached in five Olympic and two Paralympic Games. His main hockey contribution has been as a researcher, innovator and builder in coach education, program and player development in the hockey world.
