Ciraco, Simonise, Sceviour pegged as top CFL prospects

CALGARY – Three University of Calgary Dinos are among the 20 best Canadian prospects for next year's draft, the Canadian Football League announced Wednesday.

Current offensive linemen Darius Ciraco and Ryan Sceviour landed at No. 5 and No. 16, respectively, on the list, while former wide receiver Rashaun Simonise landed at No. 12 in the preseason rankings. In total, 15 of the 20 names on the CFL's list come from U SPORTS institutions, with Vanier Cup combatants Calgary (3) and Laval (2) joined by Montreal (2) as the only schools with multiple representatives.

All three players have earned All-Canadian selection during their careers, with Ciraco (2015) and Sceviour (2016) taking second team honours while Simonise was a first-teamer in 2015.

The Dinos are in the upper echelon of U SPORTS programs producing CFL players, with 21 alumni on rosters to start the 2017 season. Calgary had a record nine players taken in the 2016 draft, with a total of 42 draftees in the last 10 years.

Calgary, ranked No. 4 in the U SPORTS Top 10 to open the 2017 season, kicks off the campaign Friday night when the Dinos visit the Alberta Golden Bears. Game time is 7 p.m. at Edmonton's Foote Field, live on CanadaWest.tv.
