Dinos mourn sprinter Mariano Ezeta

| By:
CALGARY – Over the weekend, the University of Calgary Dinos track and field team lost Mariano Ezeta to a long battle with cancer.

The Dinos are saddened by this news and extend our deepest condolences to Mariano's family, friends and teammates.

Mariano, 23, competed for the track and field team during the 2012-13 and 2014-15 seasons and won a Canada West Men's Track and Field Championship with the Dinos in 2015. He won conference gold medals in the 4x200m and 4x400m relays that season. Individually, Mariano earned a Canada West bronze in the 300m and finished seventh overall at nationals.

It was shortly after the 2015 season that he was diagnosed with cancer and was forced to miss the past two seasons.

Our thoughts remain with Mariano's family, friends and teammates.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 5 at St. Luke's Catholic Church, 1566 Northmount Drive NW. A celebration of life will follow at 5 p.m. at the Calgary Marriott Hotel downtown (Centre St. and 9th Avenue), in the Sunalta room on the second floor. Everyone is welcome and asked to wear red - Mariano's favourite colour. The University of Calgary will lower flags on campus in Mariano's honour on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the University of Calgary as a scholarship will be set up in Mariano's name. Donations will be accepted at both venues as well as online.
