Dinos release 2010 football schedule

CALGARY – The Uteck Bowl champion and two-time defending Canada West champion University of Calgary Dinos released their 2010 schedule Wednesday, and they will put their 13-game home winning streak on the line right away.

For the third straight season, the Dinos will open the campaign against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in Week 1 – with the exception that this time, the game will be played at McMahon Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 4, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

FULL 2010 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

In both 2008 and 2009, the Dinos travelled to Saskatoon to open the season, including a classic overtime match-up won 34-33 by the Huskies in 2009. The 2010 season opener will also be a rematch of the last Dinos-Huskies meeting, a 39-38 Calgary win in the 73rd Hardy Cup – also played at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.

It will be Saskatchewan's first trip to McMahon since the 2007 season. The Dinos will head to Saskatoon for the return tilt on Friday, Oct. 15.

Another highlight of the season will come in Week 2 when the Dinos host the Regina Rams on Friday, Sept. 10 in KICKOFF V, the University of Calgary's annual fall welcome party. KICKOFF will cap off Orientation Week under the lights at McMahon Stadium.

With the departure of Simon Fraser for the NCAA, Canada West Football returns to a six-team league in 2010, resulting in several changes to the schedule. There will be one common bye weekend over Thanksgiving in early October, and each team will play a home-and-home series with three opponents rather than the previous two.

Calgary will see Saskatchewan, Regina, and Alberta twice each this year, with lone meetings against UBC and Manitoba. The Dinos will host the Thunderbirds on Saturday, Oct. 2, one week after visiting Winnipeg to take on the Bisons Sept. 25.

The Dinos will close the regular season against the Alberta Golden Bears for the third straight year, although this one will also be at home after two consecutive season-enders at Foote Field in Edmonton.

The top four of the six teams will qualify for the playoffs, with semi-finals on Saturday, Nov. 6. The 74th Hardy Cup championship goes one week later, with the winner earning the right to host the Atlantic University Sport champion in the CIS Mitchell Bowl for a trip to Vanier Cup XLVI at Université Laval in Quebec City.

Fans will be able to get a preview of the 2010 edition of the Dinos as the 2010 Spring Camp rolls into McMahon Stadium April 30-May 2. The weekend will open with the annual Recruit Signing Day on Friday afternoon, when the incoming recruiting class will be announced and introduced, and will culminate on Sunday with the Red-White scrimmage game.
