WINDSOR, Ont. – It turned out to be quite a Thursday for University of Calgary Dinos sprinter #Sam Effah# at the 2010 CIS Track and Field Championships.

Just hours after receiving his third consecutive CIS Track Athlete of the Year award, Effah was on the track looking for another three-peat – this time in the 60-metre dash. And he wasted no time adding another entry to the CIS record book at the University of Windsor's St. Denis Centre.

In the second of two preliminary heats, Effah put up a blazing time of 6.57 seconds – lowering the eight-year old CIS record by a hundredth of a second, and finishing nearly two tenths ahead of his closest competitor as he easily qualified for the evening final.

Just over an hour later, Effah lined up for the final and put up another time under his previous personal best, this time stopping the clock in 6.59 seconds and edging out York's Tyrone Halstead by six hundredths to win his third straight CIS gold in the event.

Not only was Effah's 6.57 preliminary time good enough for a new CIS championship record, but it puts him in the top 25 worldwide in the 60 metres so far in 2010. The top time in the world this year belongs to Ivory Williams of the United States, who posted a 6.49 in late February.

Effah will return to the track Friday, where he will look to regain his 300-metre title from 2008 after taking silver in the event last season. He is the top seed in the event, with his season-best time of 33.30 seconds nearly four tenths ahead of the second seed. He will also lead the Dinos' entry into the 4x200-metre relay on Sunday.

Other than the marquee event, the 60 metres, Thursday was a quiet day for the Dinos at the CIS championships. The only other Dino in action, #Mike Saizew#, finished third in his 600-metre heat and qualified for Saturday's final with the third-best time overall.

The CIS Track and Field Championships wrap up on Sunday.
