EDMONTON – The Calgary Dinos men's and women's track and field teams each grabbed third place overall while sprinters
Sam Effah and
Amonn Nelson grabbed the Outstanding Performers awards as the Canada West Track and Field Championships wrapped up at the University of Alberta Saturday.
FULL RESULTS
The University of Saskatchewan women captured their second consecutive Canada West track and field championship, while the Regina Cougar men earned their first conference track banner after the final day of competition at the Butterdome.
The Saskatchewan women, ranked No. 3 in the country, were the story of the weekend though, as their deep and powerful team led through both days of competition, eventually finishing with 119.50 points, more than 20 points ahead of the closest team. The win is the 20th conference championship in program history.
In second place with 97 points was the host University of Alberta Pandas, followed by Calgary (59 points), Manitoba, Regina, Victoria and Lethbridge.
Regina, which also led all weekend, closed out the men's championship with 101.50 points, while Saskatchewan finished in second with 89 points. The Cougars are ranked No.7 in the CIS. Calgary, once again, finished in third place and was followed by Manitoba, Alberta, Victoria and Lethbridge.
Amonn Nelson took gold in an eye-popping four different events, winning the 60m and 300m sprints alongside two relay golds in the 4x200m and 4x400m. Nelson capped off her big weekend in accepting both the Outstanding Performer award as well as the Outstanding Performance award after winning the 300m by 1.14 seconds.
Danielle Kendall was a part of both the gold medal winning 4x200m and 4x400m relays for the Dinos, while
Jamie Waine took third in the shot put event with a throw of 12.74m.
Effah, the two-time defending CIS Track Athlete of the Year, took gold in both the 60m and the 300m, and like Nelson took the Outstanding Performer and Performance awards thanks to his 60-metre win by more than two tenths.
Calgary's Mike Saizew won the 600m run and anchored the 4x400 relay team to gold as well, where they won by over a second's difference.
Even with the speedy Effah on their side, the Dinos could not capture the 4x200m relay race, as the Regina foursome of Mason Foote, Eric Clark, Leslie Andersen and Enyinnah Okere stopped the clock first with a time of 1:29.07.
Ryan Russell qualified for CIS nationals with his solid run in the 1000m, while
Scott Nicol took third.
Josh Riker-Fox and
Adam Elford took fifth and sixth in the event to round out a solid Dinos effort.
The Dinos will now set their sights on the CIS Championships at the University of Windsor March 11-13.
