WINDSOR, Ont. (CIS) – Two CIS records fell on Day 1 of the 2009 CIS Championships Thursday in Windsor.

Hometown favourite Jamie Adjetey-Nelson, of the Windsor Lancers, used a personal best time of 8.21 in the 60m hurdles to shatter his own CIS record that he set as a freshman en route to winning the Men's Penathlon with 4075 points. Teammate Derek Watkins earned the Lancers a 1-2 finish as he took home the silver after he earned 3807 points while Chris Crossley of Saskatchewan won bronze with 3720 points.
The other record to fall on the opening day was in the Women's 60m event. Top-ranked Genevieve Thibault out of Laval University set the meet record in the preliminaries, running a time of 7.33 seconds. She proceeded to break her own record, winning the gold medal in the final, in a blistering time of 7.31 seconds. Miana Griffths of Guelph took home the silver medal in 7.50 seconds and Noelle Montcalm of the Windsor Lancers repeated her performance from a year ago, capturing the bronze in 7.64 seconds.
Other finals on the day included the Men's 60m where Sam Effah of Calgary, the top-ranked athlete in the event, repeated as the gold medalist, winning a close race in 6.65 seconds. Ben Youssef Meité of Sherbrooke took home the silver in 6.66 seconds while Tyrone Halstead of York won bronze in 6.68 seconds.
In the Women's Pentathlon, a close battle throughout between #1 ranked Jen Cotten of Western and #2 ranked Chelsea Valois of Regina. In the end, Cotten used a very strong 800m run to capture the gold medal for a second year in a row with 3687 points. Valois, who led for three of the five events, took the silver with 3621 points while Tory Merrill from Toronto took the bronze with 3361 points.
The final medal event of the day was the Women's Weight Throw. Liz Dubourt out of the University of Saskatchewan, ranked #3 coming into the championships, shocked top-ranked Annie Larose of Sherbrooke to win the gold medal with a throw of 18.09m. Larose finished second with a throw of 17.98m while reigning gold-medalist Heather Steacy added a bronze medal to her collection with a throw of 17.82m.
